Thus, a context of strong instability and evolution has emerged, which has led to profound systemic crises, in which the local dimension seems to have been overwhelmed by such emergencies of a global scale and scope (Cogliati Dezza, 2021). These are changes that certainly motivate a reflection on the impacts generated at the local level (Lazzeroni, 2004; Tria, 2019); at the same time, however, they highlight the occurrence of a reverse process in which local communities, and in particular those of marginal and rural areas, play an important role - and not passive as it might appear to a more superficial reading of events - in encouraging or hindering this evolution taking place in a more or less silent way, slow and parallel to the dynamics of globalization. A path of local development cannot, therefore, ignore the events that permeate the global context in order to identify ways and times with which to couple exogenous pressures and changes in the current situation with “local responses” capable of improving the reaction capacity of local communities and their ability to co-build networks, opportunities, future projects (Dematteis, Governa, 2005; Bianchi, 2021). Development passes through participatory, cooperative and aggregative logics that today characterize numerous peripheral or marginal territories (Cerutti et alii, 2021): to promote the type of evolution outlined so far, it is not enough to resort to new technologies, starting with digital ones, or necessarily developing new products or services capable of affecting the competitiveness and recovery of local contexts, but rather focusing on new ways of conceiving relationships between communities and the “outside world” as well as between those who live and work inside of communities. , Among the key paradigms that accompany the current dynamics, that of slowness brings with it “thoughts and words” of sustainability, attention and awareness, both on an ecological-economic level and on the social-personal level, which can lead along broad and fruitful paths of reflection that make slowness a “territorial project”. It is the tool, as well as the purpose, with which to expand time, observe spaces, assume rhythms and co-responsibly evaluate activities to be undertaken. The same term “sustainable” is declined in the meanings of quality, awareness, slowness, in the name of a change in the way of knowing, representing and valuing local places and communities (Spagnoli, Varasano, 2023). , Starting from these considerations, the contribution aims to deepen the analysis of “slowness” according to a qualitative survey methodology centered on the identification of initiatives and projects considered significant. Three binomials have been identified as an investigative filter, according to which slowness is combined with the rural world, with that of smart technologies and with tourism. These are perspectives that do not profile separate areas, but rather that offer geographical views on the dynamics with which slowness weaves stories and journeys in marginal territories.
