Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

[Machine translation] The novel is one of the great legacies of French fiction in verse from the Middle Ages. This study traces the material history of a literary genre, following the variation in the production of texts and manuscripts; the evolution of the perception of the genre with respect to related genres, to which it is often combined; the change in the external morphology of the artifacts, throughout the history of the French novel in verse. Through quantitative data, it is possible to follow an evolution of taste, which over time has preferred one given book model to another, certain dimensions and certain aspects of the written and decorated page, while also producing deliberately abnormal individuals, whose diversity can now be highlighted and interpreted. In short, the book tends to provide a first story of a literary genre through the material study of the witnesses of its texts. The manuscript book, texts, aesthetics of production and reception are reassembled into a cultural framework reconstructed through a systematic collection of data and a direct analysis of the sources.
