Abstract
[Machine translation] Analyzing the historical development of the Province, starting from pre-unitary Italy to reach the Constitution, the legal profiles that from the beginning have characterized its nature as an intermediate body, of a vast area, a crisis between the expression of local autonomy and the need for bureaucratic-governmental management. Precisely its hybrid nature, straddling something natural and necessary (local autonomy) and something else artificial and accidental (the design of administrative geography), periodically places the Province at the center of the most important institutional debates.
