Abstract
[Machine translation] This paper proposes and discusses a comparison between ‘Inf.’, xviii 1 (« Luogo è in inferno, detto Malebolge »), and Sallust, ‘Catil.’, 55 3 (« est in carcere locus, quod Tullianum appellatur »). Without refusing other echoes of the beginning of Malebolge passage, the possibility of a Sallustian reminiscence is considered in light of Dante’s possible direct or indirect access to the Latin source.
