Abstract

Ten years' experience in the surgical treatment of oesophageal cancer are reported. In the period 1980-1989, 625 patients suffering from oesophageal cancer were observed. Of these, 490 were admitted to hospital and of the latter, 172 (35.1%) underwent surgery with resectability of 86% (148 patients). The data for this period were analysed retrospectively and prospectively by means of a computerised system. Radical operation totalled 105 (70.9%) and palliative operations 43 (29.1%). Actuarial survival at 3 years in 21.7%, with differences at the limit of significance (p < 0.l) for radical resections compared to palliative types.
