Abstract

[Machine translation] The contribution questions the relationship between roads and assistance structures in the church, with specific reference to northern Italy. The survey shows that these reception centers (variously defined: xenodochia, hospitalia...) play an important role in the organization of the territory, acting as reference centers not only for travelers, but also for supporting the needs of various kinds present in the territories. Dependent on monasteries or episcopal complexes, they perform an important function of social regulation, as well as performing an important function of economic coordination.
