Abstract

[Machine translation] The mild climate, the limited needs of the population and demographic stability are the key elements that, according to Hendrik Bolkestein, shaped the economy of ancient Greece, characterized by low consumption, low growth and the presence of small businesses in all work sectors, from agriculture to crafts to commerce, thus making research within large economic enterprises chimerical as well as of a contrast between industrialists and proletarians. In 1923, Bolkestein's essay on the economic life of classical Greece opened new perspectives to research on the ancient Greek economy, distinguishing itself from the German modernist school, which instead saw only a quantitative and not qualitative difference compared to the modern capitalist economy, but the lack of luck encountered by this work, dictated mainly by linguistic reasons, has robbed the historiographic debate of an original voice that this Italian edition now intends to reproduce as a contribution to reflection on the economy Greek and the history of ancient studies.
