Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a tool of indisputable usefulness for diagnosis and monitoring of various lung diseases. Basic principles of LUS and lung artifacts will be described in this chapter, in order to learn how to perform a scan of the thorax and how to recognize and differentiate a normal from a pathological lung. This chapter also describes the evaluation of the diaphragm with ultrasound (DUS), highlighting the techniques to assess movement and thickening of the diaphragm. DUS is useful in several situations from assessing diaphragm dysfunction in the critically ill patients or as an index for weaning from mechanical ventilation.
