FAMILY FIRMS: LEADING FOR IMPACT- Sustainability Drivers and Barriers in family businesses: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Nowadays, firms can no longer ignore the relevance of sustainability. Therefore, there is an increased interest in literature to understand how firms can implement sustainability into strategy, practices and daily organizational activities. An aspect that has caught recent interest in research is family firms due to the relevance of their presence in business and how they adopt sustainability. Hence, this study aimed to analyze and provide an overview of the main drivers and barriers to implementing sustainability in companies, with a focus on family businesses. While adopting the contingency theory-based framework, and systematic literature review and manual content analysis as research methodologies, the study investigated documents published in journals from 2010 to 2023. The findings highlight the most common internal and external drivers and barriers of sustainability in family literature, providing practical and theoretical implications and a future research agenda.
