Abstract

[Machine translation] Before the spread of the company canteen, the lunch break during the work shift at the factory was spent in the barachin, the apprenticeship. The meal container was a constitutive element of the worker's identity: “he works as a barachin”, “he is an Agnelli barachin” were common expressions that in the years of the economic boom designated the worker himself, especially those who worked in the Fiat factories. The barachin was an emblem of the working world and factory life: the exhibition and the catalog “Hunger for work. Stories of working-class gastronomy”, drawing attention back to the forms and practices of this gastronomic knowledge, they want to document an important turning point in recent Italian history that is too quickly forgotten.
