Distribution of major, minor and trace metals in lake environments of Antarctica

Abstract

The distribution of a series of metals in natural samples collected in four Antarctic lakes (Carezza, Edmonson Point, Inexpressible Island and Tarn Flat), during the Italian Expeditions carried out in the period 1993-2001 within the National Research Program on Antarctica, was examined. The concentrations of thirteen elements, namely, Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Si, Sr and Zn, were determined in all the lacustrine samples. In addition, the concentration of Cd, Co, Ni and Pb was evaluated in the water samples and the one of La, Li, Ti and Y in the sediment and algae samples. The results obtained from lacustrine waters analysis were elaborated by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA). In addition, for algae samples, the enrichment factor (Calgae/Cwater) was calculated to check their bioaccumulation properties towards some heavy metals.
