Abstract
By a single and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) study, we measured the excitability of the primary motor cortex before and after sleep deprivation in seven normal subjects. We observed a significant (p<0.05) reduction of both inhibition and facilitation, as tested by paired- TMS, after sleep deprivation. These changes might be due to the alterations in the cerebral neurotransmitters that have been associated with sleep deprivation. They likely represent a substrate for the enhanced expression of electrical and clinical epileptic abnormalities after sleep deprivation.
