Abstract
[Machine translation] This study, which is part of the Historiography of the Oaths of Strasbourg project, is devoted to the two books on the Goths published by Bonaventura Vulcanius in 1597: a collection of historiographical texts and a small monograph on the Gothic language in which the humanist inserts his transcription of the Oaths of Strasbourg. The aims of this undertaking are both archaeological and ideological, because Vulcanius is part of a vast current of research aimed at rediscovering the noble roots of the nations of Northern Europe. From then on, his interest in so-called “barbaric” idioms (the Gothic language and the Germanic languages) also proved to be oriented towards the promotion of the local languages and non-Latin peoples.
