Abstract
[Machine translation] The volume addresses, in a multidisciplinary key, the discussion on the political, ethical, social and institutional scenarios outlined by the impetuous progress of, scientific and technological knowledge in the field of robotics, digitalization and artificial intelligence. These transformations, which took place progressively between the last decades of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, are likely to profoundly change the socio-economic balances, cultural traditions and reference values consolidated in the twentieth century, understood as the golden age of national democracy and of the attempt to project it , principles and models at the supranational level, through the process of European integration. The essays published here address, on the one hand, the challenges that the digital revolution and the development of artificial intelligence pose to the theory and practice of democracy, whose methods and procedures are questioned — for example through the collection and systematic use of data — but also the moral and value bases, starting from the very concept of equality. On the other hand, the analysis proposed here focuses specifically on the attitude of the European Union, which for some time has been confronted with the opportunities, ambiguities and risks associated with the digital age, experimenting with increasingly refined forms of regulation and culminating in the process of adopting the AI Act, in progress just as this work sees the light of day.
