Abstract

[Machine translation] The essay traces the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Russia starting with the de-criminalization following the collapse of the Soviet Union, to analyze the period of relative freedom in the nineties of the twentieth century and then the progressive criminalization starting with Putin's rise to power. In particular, it should be noted that the policy against gender and sexual dissent is not a new trait of Putinian politics but dates back to the very early 2000s when the first legislative measures were taken. The history of progressive discrimination is then traced also through propaganda, international politics and real physical persecution, such as those that occurred in Chechnya.
