Abstract

What is the relationship between art criticism and the public sphere? I would like to consider the issue from di erent perspectives. By “criticism” I mean a vivid, owery and socially deployed activity: it is not the dry routine of academic literature or of “secondary discourse”, rather it is a general way of thinking, a fully interrogative, inspired and problematic attitude that is manifested in singular recognition. For the most part we are talking about art criticism in a manifold sense: we consider stylistic art “criticism”, iconographic reconstruction, sociological or institutional analysis. It is unavoidable that all di erent types of criticism should be referred to. Let me start o however by saying that the essay starts as an attempt to respond to a speci c question. How do we establish good partnerships between stylistic criticism and “militant” criticism (or “civil”, as I prefer to say)? I am looking for some founding references into Enlightenment tradition and in more recent philosophical practice.
