Abstract

[Machine translation] This book addresses an issue relevant to social work: how can social workers exercise power in their professional practice in an anti-oppressive logic? How can power be exercised by treating the 'person as a subject capable of self-determination and active act'?, The author tries to answer these questions (adopting a specific theoretical perspective of social work, that of 'critical social work'):, first, dealing with social control as a specific manifestation of power in the relationship between social worker and user; , secondly, analyzing how the paradigms - which guide the evaluation process through which the social worker defines the situation of a user to decide whether to carry out a professional intervention - influence the forms through which power is exercised, forms that can favor or counter anti-oppressive practices;, and finally, proposing some theoretical and methodological ideas (a “toolbox”) for social workers who intend to embrace a critical approach to social work aimed at changing, in an anti-oppressive direction, power relations with service users. , With this book I intend, ultimately, to provide an interpretative framework and some methodological ideas to rediscover the meaning of social work in which power can be managed in a transformative direction, consistent with the principles of the code of ethics.
