Choosing Their Own Nation: National and Political Identities of the Italian POWs in Russia, 1914-21

Abstract

This chapter describes how the Trentine POWs in Russia during World War I reacted to the requests of choosing a fatherland during their captivity from 1914 to 1921. The processes of denationalization and re-nationalization that characterised the events of WWI are analysed through the reading of official documents as well as private correspondence and personal diaries writtew by the prosoners themselves.
