Abstract

This essay gives an overview of candidates' selection and election methods and their implications. It tries to relate candidates' characteristics to the selection and the election processes that lead an individual to hold a public office and to show some consequences of different norms and procedures on candidates' campaign style. The focus is exclusively on candidates in representative democracies.
