Abstract

[Machine translation] What is cancel culture really? What are the origins of this expression, now very widespread, and what are its characteristics? Where and how was it born, and what happened when it arrived in Italy?, The volume tries to answer these questions, illustrating the way in which the theme of cancel culture has been declined in the Italian public debate, distinguishing between practices, labeling and political effects. Through an analysis of posts published on social media by the main Italian newspapers and political actors, the volume shows that cancel culture is an “epiphenomenon”, which exists to the extent that it is narrated, around which, however, a game is being played for the right to speak (and censorship). Although, in fact, cancel culture is a purely journalistic product in Italy, its narrative, intersecting with the pre-existing debate surrounding the so-called “gender ideology”, has determined unprecedented political alliances and unexpected effects of reality, including the collapse of the Zan bill.
