Abstract

A recent trend in Bayle scholarship suggests a sort of third way between the atheist (in a philosophical sense) and the fideistic interpretations. This article argues that this third way is hardly compatible with thedichotomous structure of Bayle's thought. Indeed, the great impact of Bayle's positions on later thinkers (such as Toland, Collins, Meslier, Fréret, Hume, d'Holbach) has to be identified in thenecessity - that he clearly established-of a (non-skeptical) atheist conclusion to the theological debates.
