Abstract

Several auto-epitaxies of tabular (010) crystals of newberyite were produced by crystallization at 25 and 40oC of ammoniacal solutions of magnesium and phosphate ions in the range 0.05-0.25 M. The mutual orientations of the individuals were measured and the corresponding two-dimensional coincidence cells on the (010) plane were found. Three of the auto-epitaxies were observed to evolve to penetration twins, whose twin laws are (102), (304), (401), respectively. It is shown that the original composition plane is (010) for all the twins. The growth conditions of auto-epitaxies and twins are briefly discussed.-E.v.P.Univ. degli Studi di Torino, Dipto di Scienze della Terra, Via San Massimo, 24, I-10123 Torino, Italy.
