Abstract

[Machine translation] Based on an anecdote contained in the Economici attributed to Aristotle that corroborates the story of Diodorus, it seems possible to place the peace of 375/4 between Athens and Sparta in the spring of 374 instead of in the autumn of 375, as the story of Xenophon would suggest. Such dating allows us to reflect on the timing followed in classical Greece for the conclusion of peace in general, which, when datable, almost always fall in the spring period, when the return of summer forced the conflicting parties to make an urgent choice between the conclusion of peace or the resumption of hostilities.
