Abstract
[Machine translation] In recent years, in an attempt to draw attention to environmental issues, the walls of Italian streets have come alive with whales, bears, trees and flowers, but also with smoking chimneys. After briefly retracing the history of graffiti, street art and muralism, the book tells of those walls that are the canvas for environmental narratives. A geographical experiment from which four main symbolic metaphors emerged (animals, natural elements, human figures and anthropogenic elements) that embody the struggles against climate change, plastic in the oceans, industrial pollution and much more. But what is hidden behind these symbols? The tendency is to convey an environmental discourse rooted in an anthropocentric vision typical of the Western world, but with exceptions (antispecism, deep ecology, ecofeminism, anticapitalism). In addition, certain symbols are representative of the place where the works arise, sometimes giving voice to territorial conflicts. Artistic geographies of resistance that create the essence of meanings and identity of a place. So can we talk about artivism for the environment?
