Abstract
[Machine translation] Compliment is one of the most studied linguistic acts, as evidenced by the extensive literature dedicated to this topic. Research focuses mainly on the use of explicit compliments, probably because they occur more frequently than implicit ones. Instead, this paper aims to examine implicit compliments, in which the recipients “need to infer the corresponding implications for their interpretation” (MAÍZ-ARÉVALO, 2012, p. 983; see also BOYLE, 2000), in a corpus of interactions in Italian and German drawn from two social networks, Instagram and WhatsApp. First, the study examines and compares, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the communication models used to express compliments implicit in the two languages; then, through a detailed analysis of the reactions to compliments by the recipients, it explores how the linguistic acts in question are perceived by users of Italian and German platforms and detects which types of responses are mainly used by the subject being complimented.
